Camping

Vendredi 28 nov: nous allons chercher notre campeur, un Maui Frontier pour 6 personnes, puis nous partons pour le sud-ouest de l'Australie afin de visiter la région viticole de Margaret River.

Nous nous arrêtons pour manger une bouchée avant de faire une randonnée dans la forêt de Boranup composée principalement d'eucalyptus géants, les karris, qui peuvent atteindre jusqu'à 90 mètres de hauteur – tout simplement magnifique. Pour nous rendre au cœur de la forêt, nous devions emprunter une route non pavée; comme nous ne roulions vraiment pas vite, les filles ont eu la permission de se coucher sur notre lit, celui à l'arrière du campeur, et d'admirer le paysage à travers les trois vitres – elles ont beaucoup aimé l'expérience.

Flies

Carlos had read in a funny book about Australia (Down Under) by Bill Bryson that the flies in Australia were among the most annoying in the world. He did NOT exaggerate, not a bit, at least not about W. Australia. Another tourist filmed his experience, and we can relate to it. It is so persistent, that it has given rise to a distinct expression, the “Aussi Salute”; definition: “Bush salute is the waving of one's hand in front of the face at regular intervals in order to prevent bush flies from landing on it, or entering one's nose or mouth.”

Hamelin Bay

Nous allons à Hamelin Bay car nous espérons y voir des raies; nous sommes très chanceux et pouvons apercevoir de très près, et même toucher pour Éliane, plusieurs raies, de diverses grandeurs et couleurs. Nous dormons sur place, dans le parc national.

Wine and cattle

Puis nous visitons un vignoble, Sandalford Wines, et Carlos choisit un vin style Sauterne, un Botrytis Semillon 2011. But you have to understand that there was no wine-tasting whatsoever for the girls, as that is absolutely out of the question in Australia; we were told by a Frenchman working at a winemaker's that if he were caught serving alcohol to a minor, he would be fined 6,000 AUD, as well as his employer, and he would loose his work visa. 

Nous visitons également une boutique d'huile d'olives et les filles en choisissent une bouteille, le mélange premium, ainsi que deux pots d'olives organiques.

Sheep farm

Mardi 2 déc: nous sommes allés visiter un élevage de moutons mérinos (Yallingup Shearing Shed) et nous avons eu droit à une excellente visite et démonstration (rassemblement et tonte des moutons). Les filles ont eu l'occasion mettre la main à la pâte et elles ont pu donner à boire à des agneaux. Notre guide, excellent, nous a expliqué que les moutons mérinos n'ont généralement qu'un petit à la fois; si la brebis a des jumeaux, le fermier doit s'occuper d'un des deux car la brebis ne pourra pas nourrir deux agneaux.

Canal Rocks

Nous suivons ensuite la suggestion du guide et allons faite une randonnée sur une formation rocheuse avec une vue très impressionnante sur l'océan indien. Carlos et Éliane s'aventurent plus hardiment pendant que Chloé et moi partons en hauteur pour admirer les vagues puissantes qui viennent se briser sur les rochers.

Bunbury's Dolphin Discovery Centre

Mercredi 3 déc: Nous avons juste le temps de faire une activité, mais wow, quelle activité! Nous allons à la zone d'interaction en face du Dolphin Discovery Centre du Bunbury. La zone d'interaction est tout simplement située sur la plage, dans les eaux peu profondes en face du centre, où des dauphins viennent parfois, en été, pour observer les humains. L'apparition des dauphins, qui sont complètement sauvages, n'est pas garantie, cela dépend tout simplement si les dauphins ont le goût de venir ou non; aucun incitatif ni aucune récompense ne sont offerts. L'activité, gratuite, est supervisées par des bénévoles, presque exclusivement des retraités. Nous nous plaçons donc dans l'eau, à mi-cuissine, en une seule rangée, et espérons que les dauphins seront au rendez-vous. Nous avons eu énormément de chance car il y avait ce matin six dauphins, 3 femelles dont deux accompagnées de leur bébé, et un mâle. Les dauphins se promènent devant nous, font des aller retour, vont et viennent, nous observent, etc. C'était vraiment fantastique, de pouvoir être si près de ces belles bêtes, dans leur habitat naturel, de les observer, et de nous faire observer.

BALI-Religion, burial at sea, gamelan music and some traditional theatre/dance (Carlos - English)

An uncle of the manager at our first villa died. This, like most important events in Bali, is celebrated by a ceremony. In this case, hours at the family temple (all extended families have at least one family temple), and then a procession ending at the beach, very close to where we were staying. His son and two other family members carried his ashes (cremated, as per hindu tradition) and offerings into the water, up to the point where they couldn't walk any more, then threw in the axes. I asked them why there were no long faces, no tears, etc; I was told that that had already happened, and that he would come back as something better, if he had been good during this life.

Balinese Dance. Seen in Ubud. From the Mahabharata, the story of "Sunda and Upasunda". The gods, called together by Indra, have to decide how to tackle the problem of the two powerful giant brothers, Sunda and Upasunda, who intend to conquer the universe, Heaven included. They opt for the classic ploy, and send the beautiful goddess Niatama down to Earth to seduce them, aided by a grip of also-beautiful Bidadaris (heavenly nymphs).

 The two brothers, heretofore allies, become rivals for the love of Niatama. And they fight, obviously. When they are exhausted, the goddess releases them from their spell, and they renounce their fiendish plan to conquer heaven

While the giants do battle, their retainers and people are also seduced by the heavenly nymphs... 

BALI-Second Villa and food (Carlos & Marie - English & Français)

Second Villa. 

The 2^nd week we moved next door, literally. While Villa Pantai was not as beautiful as Villa Shanti, it had some advantages: it was closer to the beach, and had Made, the wonderful, creative cook that takes care of renters. As it often is the case in Bali, you give her some money, and she buys what's needed and cooks for you, Balinese and Indonesian food. Every night was a feast! We just told her: “We want fish” or “We want chicken satay”, and she would cook it, accompanied by delicious salads or different varieties of rice, etc. And once we told her we wanted to be surprised, and we were flabbergasted with the number of dishes and the variety of textures and flavours she prepared!

Marie spent most of her afternoons reading in front of the beach, where we could hear the small waves. The sea in this part of Bali is pretty tame, very safe for kids.

November: a bad month to do so much mortifying school work!... Neither my experience in South America (almost summer, classrooms could get very hot) nor in Canada (the most depressing month, cold, dark and wet, before the snow clears things up) remotely compares with this type of schooling...

FOOD!...

Nous avons passé notre deuxième semaine à Bali dans la Villa Pantai (pantai voulant dire plage). Étant donné la lourdeur et la lenteur du trafic, plus le fait que les filles avaient besoin de s'avancer dans leurs études, que la maison avait accès et vue directs sur la mer, et que Made est une cuisinière exceptionnelle, nous avons passé cette deuxième semaine essentiellement à la maison. Carlos et Marie ne sont sortis que 2 ou 3 fois en scooter pour aller faire des achats.

Made nous a préparé le souper à chaque jour (sauf dimanche, son jour de congé, mais elle avait prévu le coup et avait cuisiné doublement le samedi sans que nous ne lui demandions). Voici quelques exemples de mets que Made nous a cuisinés, pour vous donner une idée à quel point nous nous sommes régalés:

Soto Ikan (soupe de poisson) contenant crevettes, thon, calmar, citronnelle, gingembre, tomate et ail;

Sate (brochettes) de thon, de porc, de poulet (avec sauce aux arachides);

Karedok (salade de germes de soja avec sauce aux arachides), recette javanaise;

Crevettes panées;

Rouleaux de printemps aux légumes et au poulet avec sauce aigre-douce;

Bœuf au plat, légèrement piquant;

Nouilles frites aux légumes;

Calamars et crevettes dans une sauce aux tomates épicée;

Poulet pané;

Tempeh frit (le tempeh est un produit alimentaire à base de soja fermenté);

Ayam betutu (préparation de poulet haché avec noix de coco, citronnelle, etc. enveloppée dans des feuilles de bananier et cuite à la vapeur)

Plusieurs plats d'accompagnement à base d'haricots verts.

Bintang Beer. It accompanied most of Carlos' meals in Bali. A delicious pilsener, it goes well with spicy dishes. Bintang means star, brilliant.

  

Arroz con leche a la balinesa: arroz negro, se sirve con leche de coco salada. A nosotros nos gusta acompañarlo con mangos (que en Bali son perfectos, y cuestan... 10 centavos cada uno...)
